Case study – opening a bed & breakfast in Umbria
Italy is one of the primary tourist destinations in the world thanks to its rich history, exquisite landscapes and unmatched cuisine so it’s understandable that a vacation here can sweep people off their feet. One such an example comes to mind: the Jones family, after having spent a month in Italy on vacation, decided that they wanted to make Italy their home and to enrich the experiences of other tourists visiting Italy. What better way to do so than to open a bed & breakfast?
After an initial telephone consultation, we determined what action steps were needed to achieve their goal, which included reviewing the immigration requirements and preparing a summary of the tax and legal aspects of buying real estate in Italy so that they would be prepared when meeting with real estate agents and potential sellers.
A document was also prepared summarizing the procedures for opening a bed & breakfast under Italian law, including the specific regulations, which applied in the region of interest. The Jones family also requested advice on the tax implications once the business was up and running.
They were surprised to find that the type of property that could be used as a B&B varied according to the region so by knowing, for example, the dimensions that the guest rooms would have to be, they were able to narrow down the list of properties more easily. We put them in touch with an organization that provides support services for B&B owners. This organization turned out to be invaluable once the B&B was in business because it took care of reservations and payments and was able to help out with finding appropriate insurance.
